The Victorian Budget 2020-21 includes $868.6 million to ensure Victorians have the mental health support they need.
Expanding current mental health services

This includes $492 million to deliver 120 new mental health beds in the following four public hospitals across metropolitan Melbourne and Geelong:

  • Northern Hospital in Epping
  • Sunshine Hospital in St Albans
  • The Royal Melbourne Hospital in Parkville
  • McKellar Centre in North Geelong.

The new beds will help ease the current pressure on the public mental health system. They will support approximately 2,500 extra hospital admissions each year and provide more than 43,000 additional days of care.

The new facilities will be designed in collaboration with people who have lived experience of mental illness, their carers and families and the mental health workforce. This will help ensure the spaces and models of care are safe, culturally appropriate and promote healing and recovery.

Early design work and consultation with consumers, carers and the mental health workforce has already commenced, and construction will begin in 2021.

These new beds are in addition to the 24 Hospital in the Home beds announced earlier this year.
