The Victorian Government has started public consultation on the development of a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Act.

The Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System recommended that a new Act replace the current Mental Health Act 2014 by mid-2022.

The new Act will be an important milestone in rebuilding Victoria’s mental health system.

It will recognise people with lived experience in system leadership. It will also establish key organisations such as the new Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission that will provide strong system accountability and transparency.

The Victorian Government has committed to implementing all recommendations of the Royal Commission.

It has invested a record $3.8 billion in the 2021-22 Victorian State Budget, including funding of $7.7 million to develop the new Act.

Victorians can have a say on the new Act through the Engage Victoria website

Consultation materials are available in 18 community languages and Easy English.

The consultation closes at midnight on Sunday 4 July 2021.
